The phone rang just as I was putting on my jacket. Caller ID showed a medical-device company we had quoted months earlier. The buyer did not say hello. She said, 'I need a custom ostomy wafer cutting tool. We need twelve of them. Our supplier did not deliver. Can you do it in 36 hours?'
An ostomy wafer cutting tool is not something most people think about. It is a small, curved cutter used to trim barrier wafers for ostomy pouches. That email was better than any purchase order.
What I learned about the real price
I am not writing this to sell ISCAR to anyone. I write it because too many buyers still separate the tool price from the total job cost. The original supplier was cheaper by $2,300. That saving disappeared the moment the parts did not show up. Downtime, expedited freight, overtime, and a damaged customer relationship all make the low quote the expensive one.
The same logic applies to tooling. A cutting tool is not expensive if it makes the first part right and the hundredth part right. A tool is expensive if it chatters, wears unpredictably, or snaps in the middle of a rush. I have paid for cheap tools before. Every time, the rework and the scrap made the cheap price look foolish.
I still do not know how many calories are in a VMC Paloma. But I do know this: the real cost of a cheap tooling quote is usually paid overnight, at 1:37 a.m., by someone who just wanted to go home.
